The fetish of marking

The word fetish originates from the Portuguese word feitico, which means false power, object or charm. When explorers first encountered native religions in West Africa, whatever talismans or totems the locals revered were dismissed as fetishes. A fetish has since come to mean an object or practice onto which power has been transferred from the original source. Marking
